The £6,000 plant-material allowance is for a generous mixed scheme rather than a fixed prescription. It includes climbing and shrub roses, flowering shrubs, a large number of herbaceous perennials, ornamental grasses, shade plants, evergreen structure, established fruit trees, ornamental trees, climbers and bulbs. Annuals and self-seeders are excluded so the owner can add them over time.
Roses and climbers: climbing and rambling roses, repeat-flowering shrub roses, wisteria, clematis and honeysuckle.
Flowering shrubs: Hydrangea macrophylla and paniculata, Philadelphus, Weigela, Deutzia, Viburnum, flowering quince, Choisya, Spiraea and selected lilac.
Tall cottage-garden flowers: delphiniums, hollyhocks, foxgloves, lupins, verbascum, campanula, helenium, rudbeckia and Japanese anemones.
Mid-height perennials: hardy geraniums, nepeta, salvia, lavender, echinacea, alliums, astrantia, Alchemilla mollis, achillea, phlox, geum, penstemon, heuchera and sedum.
Structure and seasonal interest: ornamental grasses, ferns, hellebores, primroses, pulmonaria, daffodils, snowdrops and crocuses.
Fruit and feature trees: established apple, pear and plum trees, plus ornamental or crab apple trees. Fruit trees can be dotted through the lawn and borders rather than placed in a separate orchard.
